Before the weekend: a chicken-sitter handoff that explains the ordinary
Turn your flock's normal routine into a practical handoff, with clear observations, source-based care basics and a place for follow-up notes.
Start with what your helper will actually do
A useful chicken-sitter handoff is more than a bag of feed and a reminder to lock the coop. It explains the ordinary: which birds belong here, where clean supplies live, what happens during the morning round and what needs checking before dusk. The written handoff below is an organizational suggestion, not a veterinary protocol.
University of Minnesota Extension recommends feeding chickens and changing their water daily, collecting eggs twice daily, and returning birds to the coop at dusk to protect them from predators. Its guidance also emphasizes learning each bird's usual eating and laying habits. Those basics give your helper a starting point, but your flock's arrangements still need explaining. [1]
Write the routine in the order it happens
Walk the route with your helper before you leave. Point out the correct feed, the water supply, the gate and the latch that must be checked. Write your existing feeding instructions rather than asking someone unfamiliar with the flock to choose quantities or substitute a feed. If one task is different from your normal routine, label the change plainly.
For each round, leave a short space for the time, what was completed and anything different. A note such as 'water changed; one bird stayed apart during the feed round' is more useful for follow-up than an unsupported diagnosis. This is a record-keeping approach, not a test that can tell whether a bird is healthy.
Show the entry routine, even for a short visit
Minnesota Extension's poultry biosecurity guidance says visitors and workers must understand the farm's entry rules. It identifies boots, clothing, tools and electronic devices as possible routes for disease introduction. It also warns against assuming a weekend helper already knows the protocol. [2]
Show where outside footwear stops, where barn-specific items belong, and how your farm handles equipment cleaning. Use your veterinarian's farm-specific advice and product labels for cleaning or disinfection. Do not improvise chemical mixtures, contact times or disease-control rules from a generic checklist.
Keep the record, not a guessed diagnosis. PawLine offers daily health notes in its iOS description. Get PawLine on iPhone or Get PawLine on Android.
Keep observations beside the animal's record
PawLine's iOS listing describes animal profiles and daily health notes, including recording symptoms, behavior and observations. You can find these record-keeping features in the PawLine app. [3] Use them for your own follow-up before and after a helper's visit, if they fit your platform and workflow.
That does not mean a helper automatically has access to your account, that this website shares their notes, or that a paper handoff syncs to the app. Leave a practical on-site record and agree how urgent changes will reach you. A medication task belongs only in an existing veterinarian-directed plan, not in an improvised sitter instruction.
Leave the escalation plan in plain sight
Decide in advance whom your helper should contact if an animal is in distress or the water system fails. Keep the appropriate veterinary contact in your private handoff, not in a public blog comment or a shared public page. A record helps describe what happened; it must not delay a call for veterinary care.
Before leaving, ask the helper to explain the route back to you. Check that supplies are available and that your instructions can be followed without guessing. The goal is a clear transfer of the routine, not a claim that a checklist prevents every problem.
